Tyrone Perry - Loving You 1975 (45")

Hello my friends, I decided to present a record vinyl 45" by a saxophone player Tyrone Perry. His real name is John Tyrone Perry. He is a producer, arranger and of course a saxophone player. He is not very well-known. He started arranging for the group Steptones in the late 60s. He also continued  collaborating with them in the 70s. Specifically in 1975, he was the arranger on the song "Success Don't Come Easy" of Steptones. The vinyl record 45" was released on Fast Track Records. In the same year, he collaborated as an arranger with the famous group The Dramatics and also as a saxophone player with the singer Sugar Billy.
The same year he released a vinyl record 45" entitled "Loving You" on Gold Future Records. It was recorded at Gold-Future Studio.

This song is an instrumental soulful tune with solo flute and saxophone accompanied from backing vocals. I prefer the flip-side because it is only with saxophone solo and backing vocals. Very nice sound.

In 1976 he collaborated as an arranger and songwriter with the singer Jimmy McCloud.

In 1980, he appeared on the record 45" under the name of band "Friends". In fact this record is a disco rap but the flip-side is the song "Loving You" that he previously recorded in 1975.
In the early 80s John Tyrone Perry joined in the band called Street Corner Symphony. I don't know how long he has played for this band.

Breaking News - Announcement

Hello my friends, I am in the unpleasant position to announce sad news. The legendary, prodigious drummer and singer of jazz music Grady Tate died on Sunday at his home in Manhattan. He was 85. Grady Tate has affected my musical life because for many years I was looking for a rare vinyl record which includes a fantastic song that today is one of my all-time favorite songs. In 1984 the composer, producer and guitarist of jazz music, Rudy Stevenson booked the A&R Recording Studio in New York City so as Grady Tate and Gwynne Micheals-Hearns to record his songs "Love Wind" and "It's Time To Settle Down". Both songs were included on the vinyl record which was released on Zeus Records. During my effort to find the vinyl record, Rudy Stevenson and the trumpet player Barrie Lee Hall Jr died. I had tried to come in contact with them before they passed away.  I found the vinyl record in 2013.

Rick Bowen & Teresa Von - Want My Love 1980 (45")

Helllo my friends, I had the pleasure to present Rick Bowen and his album "Want My Love" three years ago. The album includes some nice songs with a variety of music styles.

I recently discovered a rare vinyl record 45" that includes the song "Want My Love". This song is a duet with Rick Bowen & Teresa Von. It is a different version than the album's one. In the disco version of the album the female vocalist Sue Robinson accompanies Rick Bowen on vocals. I came in contact with Rick Bowen himself and he told me that this vinyl record 45" was released at the same time with the album in 1980. Even though a year later disco music was dead, they tried to create a disco song for the album. However the final result was excellent!

The previous Sunday I included this rare song (version 45") on my playlist on the web radio Coni-OnAir.

Jimmi Mayes - Substitude For You 1987 (45")

Jimmi Mayes for more than fifty years has served as a sideman behind some of the greatest musicians and musical groups in history. Jimmi is a drummer from Chicago. He is also a vocalist, songwriter and an author. Jimmi Mayes played and toured with blues legends like Little Walter, Jimmy Reed and many others. Jimi Hendrix was one of Mayes' best friends, and they traveled together as members of Joey Dee and the Starliters in the mid-1960s.

In the late 60s, he formed his band Jimmy Mayes And The Soul Breed and later Jimmi Mayes & The Mill Street Depot. They released some singles from the mid 60s to early 80s.

In 1987 he released a single entitled "Substitute For You / Something About You I Like" under the name Jimmi Mayes And The Finess Band. It was released on Depo Records from Chicago. The song "Substitute For You" is a perfect atmospheric ballad. I love it!!!
He also released two CDs entitled "Messin' With The Kid" and "All My Best" in 2004 & 2012 respectively. Both CDs include old recordings and some recordings at that time.
I would like to note that Jimmi Mayes released a book in 2013 under the title "The Amazing Jimmi Mayes Sideman to the Stars".

Dale Vernon - Trembling In the Dark 1984 45"

I’m presenting you a rare record 45’ which was released on the label Budweiser Showdown. Several collectors collect records from the same label. Throughout the years, Budweiser Showdown has organized various events across the country through radio stations, in order to discover the next musical superstar.
Over 30 radio stations and over 5000 talented artists across the country participated in various contests from 1983 to 1989. In 1984 Dale Vernon was one of the local winners of the Budweiser Showdown contest taken place in the San Diego area. Having won the contest, Dale Vernon released on this label a record 45’’.
This record 45’ includes the song “Trembling In The Dark” which is a nice mid-tempo/ballad, featuring both Dale Vernon and an unknown female singer. I saw this record several years ago and it was an expensive one. In 2017, I was fortunate to find it again and buy it. The vinyl was in great condition, taking into consideration the fact that during the years all the times I had seen it the condition was always very bad. It is worthy to note that I have also found an mp3 format of the song, however the sound is a little bit different from the vinyl’s. I am very happy that I finally got this vinyl record 45’’.

Jimmy McGriff featuring Yollanda McCullough - Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue 1978

Hello my friends, I'm going to leave for holidays this weekend, so I'm not presenting my broadcast next Sunday on Coni-OnAir. For this reason, I decided to present you a little-known record 45" which was released by legendary organist Jimmy McGriff in 1978. It is worthy to note that this 45" includes the song "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" which was never included in any Jimmy McGriff's album.

I bought it because I noticed that the name of the female singer Yolanda McCullough was on the vinyl's label and that's why I was vey curious to listen to this song. Yolanda McCullough started in the early 70s with some advertising jingles. Later she sang as backing vocalist for the Eddie Floyd's album in 1975. In 1975 recolated from Detroit to New York. She collaborated with many artists like Diana Ross, Ashford & Simpson, Luther Vandross and others. Totally she released three albums from 1979 to 1982. The best album in my opinion is "Watching You Watching Me" in 1982. However today I'm presenting the song "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" which was released in 1978 by the legendary organist Jimmy McGriff. Yolanda or Ullanda McCullough is appeared on vocals. Original recording by Crystal Gayle in 1977.

Note: The above posted single is not played in full.
